Diabetic Wounds

A diabetic wound requires urgent attention as it has the potential to become infected.  The wound should be professionally treated yet you can also do your part with daily watering and the application of soap.  Dry the site after washing it, add an antibiotic ointment to prevent the sore from becoming exposed to germs and you’ll heal that much faster.  The foot and ankle experts at West Coast Foot And Ankle Center will provide ongoing guidance including helpful advice in regard to the application of pressure, mobility and the use of padding to avoid directly stepping on the wound.  Though there is the potential for a skin wound to heal within a couple weeks or less, a diabetic wound in the form of a cut might require upwards of a month to heal.

Especially deep wounds should prompt you to schedule an appointment at one of our offices as soon as possible.  We have offices in La Quinta, CA, Palm Springs, CA and Rancho Mirage, CA.  In particular, if you find a warm, reddened or draining infection, it is a sign that you need prompt treatment at our offices.  We will analyze your diabetic wound, provide guidance in terms of care, clean the wound, dress it and consider whether antibiotics or surgical debridement to remove the infected or dead tissue will prove optimal.  If there is a serious infection, we will consider limb amputation surgery.
